Nachdem das Label Mosaic Records vorletztes Jahr bereits eine 11-CD Box mit Classic V-Disc Small Group Jazz Sessions ver\u00f6ffentlicht hat (siehe dazu JazzZeitung<\/a> vom 07.11.2024)\u00a0folgt nun der zweite Geniestreich mit den V-Disc Big Band Jazz Sessions auf 10 CDs. Auch diese Mosaic Box ist weltweit wieder auf 5.000 Exemplare limitiert.<\/em><\/p>\n

Die legend\u00e4ren V-Discs: Amerika zieht in den zweiten Weltkrieg und die United Service Organization (USO), gegr\u00fcndet 1941, sorgte damals in \u00dcbersee f\u00fcr die Unterhaltung und das Wohlergehen von US-Soldaten. Als \u201emoralische St\u00e4rkung\u201c u.a. mit sogenannten V-Discs (\u201eVictory Discs\u201c). Musikalische Sch\u00e4tze des Jazz, der Unterhaltungsmusik und Klassik, zum Teil exklusiv aufgenommen w\u00e4hrend des \u201erecord ban\u201c von August 1942 bis November 1944. Diese Aufnahmen waren in diesem Zeitraum die einzig offiziellen Sessions und Produktionen mit Instrumentalmusikern, die f\u00fcr diesen Rahmen aufgenommen und ver\u00f6ffentlicht werden durften. Sp\u00e4ter folgten dann weitere, spezielle Aufnahme-Sessions f\u00fcr dieses Army Projekt. Als 12-inch Schellacks zusammengestellt und in 10er Kartons mit jeweils 100 Grammophonnadeln verpackt, wurden die V-Disc\u2018s dann nach \u00dcbersee verschifft.<\/p>\n

Was die vorliegenden Aufnahmen besonders interessant macht ist die Tatsache, dass sie, entstanden zwischen Oktober 1943 und November 1948, den absoluten Genreh\u00f6hepunkt der Swing Big Bands widerspiegeln. Das Lineup ist ein \u201ewho is who\u201c der damaligen Szene: Gr\u00f6\u00dfen wie Woody Herman, Les Brown, Buddy Rich, Boyd Raeburn, Count Basie oder Lionel Hampton haben exklusiv f\u00fcr diese V-Discs Sessions Musik eingespielt. Jimmy Lunceford, Claude Thornhill, Gene Krupa oder Harry James sind ebenfalls vertreten. Weiter nat\u00fcrlich die Jimmy Dorsey & Tommy Dorsey Big Band und als Special finden sich in der Box auch die legend\u00e4ren Aufnahmen der Combined Bands der Dorsey Brothers mit Charlie Shavers, Jess Stacy, Buddy Rich oder Herb Ellis.<\/p>\n

Ultimativ swingend<\/h3>\n

Zu h\u00f6ren sind hier auch die letzten Aufnahmen von Capt.\u00a0Glenn Miller mit der 418th<\/sup> AAFTC Band sowie dem Army Air Forces Training Command Orchestra, unter anderem mit Peanuts Hucko an der Klarinette und Tenorsaxophon. Neben gro\u00dfen Namen und Vertretern der Big Band Szene finden sich in der wunderbaren Box auch seltene Aufnahmen der U.S. Maritime Service Station Band, Sam Donahue mit der Navy Dance Band (u.a. mit Doc Severinson an der Trompete) oder das 344th<\/sup> Army Service Forces Orchestra. Dazwischen Ansagen von Bandleadern Woody Herman, Hal McIntyre oder Glenn Miller, die den Aufnahmen vorgeschaltet wurden. Das Ganze ist eine wahre Fundgrube f\u00fcr Big Band Enthusiasten und Fans von ultimativ swingender Musik, die den H\u00f6rer damals wie heute begeistert und sprichw\u00f6rtlich vom Hocker rei\u00dft.<\/p>\n

Fehlerteufel<\/h3>\n

Insgesamt finden sich auf den CDs allein16 St\u00fccke mit Woody Herman, von Count Basie 24 Titel sowie ein Dutzend Aufnahmen des Buddy Rich Orchestra. Insgesamt sind in der Box 247 Big Band Takes, die hier zu Tage gef\u00f6rdert worden sind. Wenn man ganz genau hinschaut und h\u00f6rt findet sich ein kleiner Fehler auf CD 5: Titel 22 von insgesamt 24 tats\u00e4chlichen St\u00fccken auf der CD (!) ist n\u00e4mlich Count Basie\u2018s \u201eCall Me Darling\u201c, der zwar in der Diskographie selbst aufgef\u00fchrt ist, aber sowohl im Booklet als auch in der \u00dcbersicht der CD dem Fehlerteufel zum Opfer gefallen ist. Damit sind es insgesamt dann 248 Titel auf den 10 CDs!<\/p>\n

Ein 44-Seiten starkes, umfangreiches, gro\u00dfformatiges Booklet mit detaillierten Angaben zu den Aufnahmen und seltenem Fotomaterial runden diese einzigartige Edition ab. Selbstverst\u00e4ndlich sind die Aufnahmen soundtechnisch, trotz des Alters und der Umst\u00e4nde, absoluter Mosaic Standard: liebevoll gereinigt, restauriert und aufbereitet von originalen Sammler V-Discs in Topzustand, Masterfolien, Glasmaster oder Acetatplatten und schlie\u00dflich abgemischt in den legend\u00e4ren Swan Studios. Ein purer H\u00f6rgenuss!<\/p>\n

Wer meint, das sei Musik von Gestern, der wird beim H\u00f6ren dieser Aufnahmen eines Besseren belehrt. Ein deutscher Schellack-H\u00e4ndler sagte mir vor zwei Jahren: das interessiert heute niemanden mehr, die Zeit dieses Metiers sei vorbei … Mosaic dagegen zeigt mal wieder Flagge und beweist das Gegenteil: die Nachfrage ist ungebrochen hoch, das Interesse weltweit vorhanden und V-Discs haben nach wie vor eine treue wie interessierte H\u00f6rerschaft.<\/p>\n

Die legend\u00e4ren V-Discs: Amerika zieht in den zweiten Weltkrieg und die United Service Organization (USO), gegr\u00fcndet 1941, sorgte damals in \u00dcbersee f\u00fcr die Unterhaltung und das Wohlergehen von US-Soldaten. Als \u201emoralische St\u00e4rkung\u201c u.a. mit sogenannten V-Discs (\u201eVictory Discs\u201c). Musikalische Sch\u00e4tze des Jazz, der Unterhaltungsmusik und Klassik, zum Teil exklusiv aufgenommen w\u00e4hrend des \u201erecord ban\u201c von August 1942 bis November 1944. Diese Aufnahmen waren in diesem Zeitraum die einzig offiziellen Sessions und Produktionen mit Instrumentalmusikern, die f\u00fcr diesen Rahmen aufgenommen und ver\u00f6ffentlicht werden durften.
