John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim, Helen Humes, Willie Dixon: Die Namen lesen sich heute wie ein Who-is-Who der Bluesgeschichte, damals \u2013 1962 \u2013 kannte sie kaum jemand. Das sollte sich \u00e4ndern mit dem \u201eAmerican Folk Blues Festival\u201c. Das war auf Anregung des damaligen SWF-Jazzredakteurs Joachim-Ernst Berendt entstanden. Und die Konzerte l\u00f6sten in ganz Europa eine neue Bluesbegeisterung aus. F\u00fcr viele der US-amerikanischen Musiker*innen waren die Tournee die erste Gelegenheit \u00fcberhaupt, au\u00dferhalb ihrer Heimat aufzutreten. Carla Bley genie\u00dft weltweite Wertsch\u00e4tzung als Grande Dame des Jazzpianos. Die heute 84-j\u00e4hrige Amerikanerin hat als Komponistin und Bandleaderin Musikgeschichte geschrieben. Zugleich hat sie sich mit einem hochindividuellen, so sparsamen wie pr\u00e4gnanten Klavierstil unverwechselbar gemacht. Seit drei Jahrzehnten arbeitet Carla Bley mit ihrem Lebensgef\u00e4hrten, dem E-Bassisten Steve Swallow, und dem britischen Saxofonisten Andy Sheppard im Trio zusammen. Solistisches und begleitendes Spiel gehen dabei f\u00fcr alle drei Musiker Hand in Hand. Im Laufe der Zeit h\u00e4tten sie gelernt, gemeinsam zu atmen, sagt die Pianistin \u00fcber ihre Band. Der Auftritt beim Stockholm Jazz Festival 2019 war eigentlich bereits f\u00fcr das Jahr zuvor geplant gewesen, musste dann aber wegen einer schweren Erkrankung Bleys abgesagt werden. Die Vibrafon-Tradition im Jazz ist eindrucksvoll, aber \u00fcberschaubar. F\u00fcr heutige Spieler bedeutet das: Es gibt einige wenige \u00fcberm\u00e4chtige Vorbilder, deren Einfluss man nur schwer entkommt. Einer, der seinen ganz eigenen Sound auf dem Instrument gefunden hat, ist der New Yorker Chris Dingman. Dingman kam \u00fcber Umwege zum Vibrafon \u2013 zun\u00e4chst erlernte er Piano und Perkussion. Erst mit 18 Jahren wechselte er zu seinem heutigen Hauptinstrument. Doch er blieb offen f\u00fcr unterschiedlichste Kl\u00e4nge und Einfl\u00fcsse: W\u00e4hrend seines Studiums verbrachte er Zeit in Indien, um die dortige Musik kennenzulernen. Neben Jazz reichen seine Interessen von Minimal Music und Ambient bis hin zu westafrikanischer Musik. Die Auswirkungen auf sein Spiel sind deutlich h\u00f6rbar: Dingman erschafft vielschichtige Akkordwolken genauso wie komplexe rhythmische Texturen. Sein Schaffen, das sich vom Solo \u00fcber das Duo mit Han Bennink bis zu dem von ihm geleiteten ICP Orchestra erstreckte, sorgte f\u00fcr produktive Verunsicherungen und entfaltete im Querdenken der Tradition eine g\u00e4nzlich eigene Wirkkraft. Am 5.
