Der Jazz-Pianist Alfred „McCoy“ Tyner ist laut seiner Website<\/a> am Freitag, den 6. M\u00e4rz, im Alter von 81 Jahren verstorben. Die New York Times bezeichnete ihn einmal als einen der einflussreichsten Pianisten im Jazz. Tyner komponierte einige bekannte Titel wie Passion Dance<\/i>, Contemplation<\/i>, Blues on the Corner<\/i>, Land of the Lonely<\/i>, Celestial Chant<\/i>, Enlightenment Suite<\/i> und Desert Cry<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Tyner begann im Alter von 13 Jahren mit dem Klavierspielen und trat seit seinem 15. Lebensjahr regelm\u00e4\u00dfig live in Jazzgruppen auf. Nachdem er John Coltrane in seiner Heimatstadt Philadelphia getroffen hatte, wurde er 1962 Mitglied des „John Coltrane Quartets“. Darauf folgten Albenproduktionen und Songs mit K\u00fcnstlern wie Tina Turner, Jimmy Witherspoon und Wayne Shorter sowie\u00a0 Schallplatten unter seinem Namen auf dem Label „Impulse!“. 1967 erschien dann das Album „The Real McCoy“. Im Jahr 1995 gewann Tyner einen Grammy in der Kategorie „Best Large Jazz Performance“ mit seiner „McCoy Tyner Big Band“ mit einem Song aus dem Album „Journey“. Einen weiteren Grammy gewann er mit seinem Album „Infinity“ in der Kategorie „Best Jazz Instrumental Performance“ im Jahr 1996. Im Jahr 2002 zeichnete ihn die NEA-Stiftung, die jedes Jahr Jazzmusiker f\u00fcr ihr Lebenswerk auszeichnet und als die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Ehrung f\u00fcr Jazz-Musiker in den USA gilt,\u00a0 schlie\u00dflich mit der Aufnahme in die „Jazz Masters Fellowship“ aus.
