Text und Foto: Karl Leitner. Immer wieder bietet der Birdland Jazzclub in Neuburg neben internationalen Gr\u00f6\u00dfen auch einheimischen Jazzmusikern ein Forum. Diesmal ist das Quintett Nicotheo zu Gast. Die Band passt deswegen in die dort bereits seit Jahren etablierte Reihe \u201eJazz aus der Region\u201c, weil Gitarrist Simon Schneid seine Kindheit in der Stadt an der Donau verbracht hat. Mittlerweile studiert er zwar an der Musikhochschule f\u00fcr Musik in W\u00fcrzburg und unterh\u00e4lt dort seit 2018 zusammen mit Nico Theodossiadis (Alt- und Sopransaxofon, Querfl\u00f6te), Jan Peter Itze (Klavier), Hannes Stegmeier (Bass) und Konrad Patzig (Schlagzeug) eine eigene Band, hat im Birdland aber nat\u00fcrlich trotzdem quasi ein Heimspiel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wenn f\u00fcnf Musiker sich treffen, kommt keiner ohne Hintergrund zum ersten Meeting. In diesem Fall sind es Rock, Pop, Modern Jazz, Funk, Soul, Klassik und griechische Folklore. Es kommt einiges zusammen, was da unter einen Hut zu bringen ist, will man f\u00fcr eine Formation eine musikalische Sprache finden. Der Prozess, einen gemeinsamen Nenner zu finden, kann im Falle Nicotheo nach so kurzer Zeit naturgem\u00e4\u00df noch nicht abgeschlossen sein, stattdessen ist der Weg das Ziel. Auf diesem Weg als Zuh\u00f6rer ein St\u00fcck mitgenommen zu werden, ist allerdings \u00fcberaus spannend.<\/p>\n

Ertragreiche Suche nach dem gemeinsamen Nenner<\/h4>\n

Noch sind die Einfl\u00fcsse deutlich erkennbar, in Theodossiadis\u2019 \u201eZembekiko\u201c etwa, das er aus einem griechischen Kriegstanz entwickelt hat, in Schneids Gitarrenarbeit zwischen George Benson und Pat Metheny einer- und dem tiefen Griff in die Rockkiste vermittels Synth-axe-Sounds andererseits. In den funky Grooves des Bassisten, im federnden Beat des Drummers, den Querverweisen auf Brad Mehldau und Michael Wollny durch den Pianisten, den quirligen Saxofonfiguren. Noch vermitteln einige St\u00fccke den Eindruck, als st\u00fcnden einzelne Bausteine nebeneinander, in den allermeisten F\u00e4llen ergeben sich aus ihnen jedoch bereits in dieser Phase \u00fcberaus reizvolle Kombinationen.<\/p>\n

Ob es sich dabei vor der Pause um Adaptionen von Richie Beirach oder des Esbj\u00f6rn Svensson Trios oder um \u201eInner Peace\u201c und \u201eThoughts Of The Past\u201c aus der Feder Jan Peter Itzes handelt oder im zweiten Abschnitt um die Titel der ersten Albums \u201eRoots\u201c, ist gar nicht entscheidend. Wichtig ist, dass zusammenw\u00e4chst was zusammengeh\u00f6rt, und dass man Zeuge dieses Prozesses sein darf.<\/p>\n

Sehr schnell spielt sich die junge Band an diesem Abend frei, f\u00fchlt sich zus\u00e4tzlich angespornt durch den Szenenapplaus aus dem Publikum. Bald ist klar: Hier kann und wird nichts mehr anbrennen, man wird nach diesem Heimspiel das Birdland als Sieger verlassen. Und genau so kommt es. Ohne Zugabe d\u00fcrfen die Musiker nicht in der Garderobe verschwinden. \u2013\u00a0 Vermutlich wird man sie ja sowieso bald wiedersehen. Hier im Birdland oder anderswo. Bei all dem Kreativpotential, das in ihnen steckt, w\u00e4re alles andere absolut verwunderlich, Bis dahin wird man ihre Musik im Ohr und sie selbst im Auge behalten. Beides lohnt sich.<\/p>\n
