Der Preis ist mit 15.000 Euro dotiert, sowie mit einer Statue des Stuttgarter Bildhauers Otto Herbert Hajek und wird verliehen von der Stiftung Kunst und Kultur der Sparda-Bank Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg, der neuen musikzeitung und JazzZeitung.de sowie der Kulturgesellschaft Musik+Wort e.V. Stuttgart.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aus der Begr\u00fcndung der Jury: \u201eAbdullah Ibrahim z\u00e4hlt zu den wichtigsten Pianisten und Komponisten des Jazz, die nicht aus dem Heimatland des Jazz, den USA, stammen. Tanzmusik und religi\u00f6se Hymnen aus den s\u00fcdafrikanischen Townships z\u00e4hlen neben Kompositionen von Duke Ellington zu den wichtigsten Einfl \u00fcssen auf die Werke von Abdullah Ibrahim. Sie verleihen seiner Musik ihre Einmaligkeit und Unverwechselbarkeit. Pianistische Virtuosit\u00e4t mischt sich mit unkonventionellen Soundvorstellungen und vor allem einer rhythmischen Komplexit\u00e4t, die den modernen Jazz der 70er- und 80er-Jahre auf neue Weise mit afrikanischen Einfl \u00fcssen konfrontierte.<br \/>\nAbdullah Ibrahim wuchs in Kapstadt auf und ging 1962 nach Europa, wo er bald darauf von Duke Ellington im Z\u00fcrcher Caf\u00e9 Africana entdeckt wurde. Dort war er fast zwei Jahre mit seinem Dollar Brand Trio, mit dem Bassisten Johnny Gertze und dem Schlagzeuger Makaya Ntshoko, aufgetreten. Dollar Brand nannte er sich, bevor er Ende der 60er-Jahre seinen aktuellen Namen mit seiner Konversion zum Islam annahm. Durch Ellingtons Vermittlung konnte sein Trio eine erste Platte einspielen unter dem Titel \u201eDuke Ellington presents the Dollar Brand Trio\u201c, die 1963 bei Reprise erschien.<br \/>\nDamit begann eine gro\u00dfe Karriere. Doch trotz internationaler Anerkennung als eine der damals seltenen afrikanischen Stimmen im Jazz zog es Ibrahim 1973 f\u00fcr drei Jahre zur\u00fcck nach S\u00fcdafrika. 1974 organisierte er dort Aufnahmen f\u00fcr mehrere einflussreiche, zun\u00e4chst im Untergrund vertriebene Platten von Cape Jazz-Musikern wie Basil Coetzee und Robbie Jansen. In dieser Zeit spielte Ibrahim mit seinen s\u00fcdafrikanischen Formationen das St\u00fcck \u201eMannenberg\u201d ein, das \u2013 mit einem beeindruckenden Solo von Coetzee \u2013 nicht nur ein Hit wurde, sondern ein musikalisches Symbol des Widerstands gegen die Apartheid. 1976 organisierte der Pianist ein Jazz-Festival, das sich um die Apartheidsgesetze nicht scherte, wenige Tage sp\u00e4ter verlie\u00df er das Land. Er kehrte erst 1990 \u2013 im Zuge der politischen Umw\u00e4lzungen \u2013 mit seiner Familie nach S\u00fcdafrika zur\u00fcck. Als Nelson Mandela 1994 das Pr\u00e4sidentschaftsamt \u00fcbernahm, sa\u00df Abdullah Ibrahim bei der Zeremonie der<br \/>\nAmtseinf\u00fchrung am Klavier.<br \/>\nDie Verleihung findet als Er\u00f6ffnungsveranstaltung der jazzopen Stuttgart 2017 im Eventcenter SpardaWelt am 7.
